The D23 Expo 2017 is just 9 days away. As it gets closer Disney keeps dropping new details that get us more excited for the event! Today I’m sharing news about the merchandise collection “Through the Years” that will be featured at the Disney Dream Store during the event at the Anaheim Convention Center. This collection showcases key milestones at the Disney Parks, like the Star Tours 30th Anniversary, EPCOT 35th Anniversary, Space Mountain 40th Anniversary, and the Pirates of the Caribbean 50th Anniversary.
Richard Terpstra, Graphic Designer with Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media Creative Group spoke a little about the creation of the four amazing posters that were used as the foundation for these collections. “My Creative Director Doug Strayer and I loved working on this project for the D23 Expo as it celebrates some of our guests’ most beloved attractions and places at Disney Parks,” explained Richard. “One of my favorite parts of this project was collaborating with the Walt Disney Archives to obtain archival reference imagery. We used some of those images in the designs. Each poster has a unique art style inspired by a particular time period. We took elements from each poster to create an overall style guide which our merchandising partners referenced when creating the product assortments.”
Vintage drive-in movie posters and advertisements from the 1960s inspired Richard for the Pirates of the Caribbean poster. Richard and character artist Dave Holbrook partnered on the creation of the Space Mountain poster which mixes 1970s futurism with styles pulled from 1920s vintage travel posters.
Richard said that the EPCOT poster was influenced by early 1980s arcade game packaging and VHS videotape covers, while Principal Character Artist Brian Blackmore lent his expertise on the character design. The Star Tours image was a collaboration between Richard and Senior Character Artist Ron Cohee creating a collage of Star Tours references.
These images will also be available for purchase on apparel, hats, drink-ware, ornaments, and more at the Disney Dream Store. The featured posters will come in an over-sized tube and a framed giclée.
Limited edition pins will also be released for each milestone. The jumbo-sized pins will each have an edition size of 500 while the individuals will have edition sizes of 1,000. D23 Expo attendees will also be able to pick up Vinylmation Eachez figures inspired by Pirates of the Caribbean and Star Tours.
Chip and Co. will be attending the D23 Expo this year bringing you all the latest news. Will you be there too?
