In a move that has shocked the entertainment industry (and of course Disney fans!), Tom Staggs has stepped down as Chief Operating Officer of the Walt Disney Company today. The announcement comes as a bit of a surprise as Staggs was supposedly next in line to be Chief Executive Officer when Bob Iger retires in 2018.
Rumors circulate that Staggs has stepped down upon hearing that he actually would not be considered for the CEO position in 2018, but alas, rumors are rumors.
The fact remains that Staggs will remain on as a “special advisor” to Iger, throughout the remainder of the fiscal year.
In the press release, Disney said, “With approximately two years left before Mr. Iger steps down as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Disney’s Board of Directors will broaden the scope of its succession planning process to identify and evaluate a robust slate of candidates for consideration.”
