Disney’s annual shareholder meeting was full of surprising announcements. From the news of Frozen 2 to the first “official” gay Marvel character, Disney news have been exploding all over the social media pages.
The latest announcement is from CEO Bob Iger. Responding to an investor’s question, Mr. Iger stated that he will “absolutely prohibit” showing any characters smoking in Disney films that have a PG-13 or below rating. Unless like in the case of “Saving Mr. Banks” they involve an historical figure who smoked and would need to be part of the character.
Although he said Disney doesn’t get involved in MPAA ratings nor try to influence other studios’ policies, Mr. Iger felt for Disney it was just the right thing to do. With the amount of influence Disney has on fans of all ages, I believe this is will have a huge impact. Disney movies are always magical and usually happily ever after. The need to include smoking as a character trait, is not necessary to make the movie successful in this Entertainment Writer’s opinion. Kudos to Bob Iger and Disney’s decision to set a good, healthy example.
