Surviving the Sweltering Disney Heat

Okay, my husband will tell you that I don’t actually melt. However, when we are at Disney in the summer heat, it can sure feel like what is happening. While many families may tolerate the hot climate better than others, some families will have some adjusting to do with the high temps.  How can you keep your cool and still enjoy the parks? Here are some of my family’s preferred ways:

  1. Put wet washcloths with a little extra water in a plastic baggie and then into the freezer over night. The next morning take them with you in a small soft-sided cooler into the park. After they thaw out a little, you can use them to wipe off your face and neck during the day.
  2. Purchase misting fans. We purchased misting fans at home and brought them with us to Disney. You can also find them in the Disney parks to purchase or locate a standalone misting station in the park (like the one in the picture above) to walk through.
  3. Get a cup of free ice water at any counter service location. If you don’t like the taste of Florida water, make sure you take your favorite drink flavoring packet with you into the park to add to your ice water.
  4. Go back to your resort during the highest heat of the day for a nap and/or a swim to cool off.  Along with this plan, look for the park with Extra Magic Hours to tour it either in the early morning hours or the late evening hours when the heat is not at its peak.
  5.  If you are determined to do the parks commando style and think that leaving a park is sacrilege even when the temperatures soar, then consider eating at a table service restaurant for lunch and linger in the air conditioning. You can also save lengthy indoor attractions or shows for right after your lunch to keep you in the air conditioning even longer.
  6. Grab a cool treat from an ice cream stand. There are several stand alone cold confectionery carts throughout the parks where you can find a Popsicle, fruit bar, or your favorite Mickey Premium Ice Cream Bar.

If one of the 4 main parks is not on your to-do list, Disney still has many options aside from lounging at your resort pool all day. You can also conquer one of the water parks – Typhoon Lagoon or Blizzard Beach, hang out and game it up at Disney Quest, grab a movie and some food at the Fork and Screen option of the AMC Theater, or swing into the coolness of bowling at Splitsville.

My family will be staying cool this summer on our Disney vacation using some of these same tips. What other recommendations do you have? How has your family beat the heat and still enjoyed themselves while at Disney?

  1. Oh – and the misting fans can be bulky to carry, but REALLY help and are worth the inconvenience when the heat is especially bad!

  2. Thanks – these are good tips. We try as hard as possible to make our WDW trips during cooler seasons because, like you, I truly do feel like I’m melting in the warm months. I’ve never tried to freeze wet cloths, so that’s a good one. I have also seen something called “chill-out towels” that you can buy on Amazon and other similar products. I might give that a shot the next time we have no choice but to make our trip to Disney in the summer. (this year we’re going in November, though – yahoo!)
