Spring has sprung—although a lot of areas across the U.S. aren’t exactly feeling it yet—and while Walt Disney World Resort is smack in the middle of the Spring Break craze, we’re already looking ahead to what’s next.
Memorial Day will fall on Monday, May 27, this year. It’s a great time of year to visit the Parks, with perfectly balanced spring/summer weather. Plus, many kids across the nation are still in school, so the crowd levels haven’t yet peaked. So what kinds of Memorial holiday happenings can you expect to unofficially kick off summer fun at the Disney Parks? Well, while there are no specific Memorial Day holiday observances at Walt Disney World, the Parks will offer extended weekend hours, and some Resort events will make the holiday extra memorable.
Guests visiting Magic Kingdom can observe the Flag Retreat, a [somewhat] formal ceremony that is held each day at 5:00 p.m. in Town Square near the park entrance. It is conducted by Walt Disney World Security members, Main Street Operations personnel, the Dapper Dans, and the Barber Shop Quartet, along with a randomly selected Guest who is a veteran of the United States military. It’s a very touching event and a special time to take pride in the nation that flag represents.
A rather non-patriotic activity that will already be in progress is the annual Star Wars Weekends, taking place from May 17 to June 9 this year at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Celebrity Guest appearances, parades, and autograph signings are scheduled to occur, and Guests are encouraged to dress in their favorite Star Wars garb.
If you’re a sports fan, head on over to the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex for the Disney Memorial Day Soccer Shootout and the Disney Sun & Surf Baseball Bash presented by Rawlings®. Both events promote youth sports participation and feature hundreds of teams competing in programs of national recognition. Last year, the Soccer Shootout attracted over 500 teams that played more than 900 matches in just three days!
No matter what you choose to do this Memorial Day weekend, please remember what—rather, WHO—we are celebrating. Take time to show your appreciation to the brave men and women who sacrifice their lives daily to serve us, to protect our national security, and to defend our homeland: members of the United States Armed Forces. And if you are headed to Walt Disney World, have a magical, memorable holiday!
