What if Aladdin had never found the lamp? This first book in the A Twisted Tale line will explore a dark and daring version of Disney’s Aladdin!
Recently I received an advanced reader copy of A Whole New World by Liz Braswell. This book is a dark twisted version of a well-known fairy tale that will leave you clutching your stomach in fear of the darkness that lies within. In this telling Jafar is an entirely more sinister villain plotting and killing anyone who gets in his way. He tricks Aladdin into getting the lamp for him which we already know right? Except it doesn’t quite go as planned for Aladdin as he ends up stuck in the abyss of the Cave of Wonder with no lamp. That’s right I said no lamp. So what’s a street rat to do?
In Liz’s retelling he climbs his way out of the cave and finds his way to the palace to rescue the deposed princess who he’s quickly fallen for except she’s not the Jasmine we know. She’s a princess bent on revenge who must rally together with the poor and down trod of her beloved Agrabah to overturn the reign of Jafar. Along with some new friends Duban and Morgiana who bring a certain missing aspect to the original movie they set out to change the world they live in only it isn’t as easy as it seems.
What I loved most about this novel was the way it showed how important every moment is. If one moment changes it could throw everything awry but it doesn’t mean life is over. The characters in this novel dust themselves off and continue to work towards their own new version of a happy ending. Together they go through hard times et find a way to keep their spirits alive and find hope in time of fear and despair, and while the novel ends on a high note it isn’t quite the fairy tale ending. It’s a real ending which to me is the best kind.
I’d recommend this book for kids 13-14 and over and give it a solid B+ for creativity and bravery.
Stay tuned for more and don’t forget to buy A Whole New World when it hits shelves September 1st!
