WonderCon 2012: Marvel Television Panel Recap

This year , I got the chance to cover WonderCon at the Anaheim convention center. One of the panels I was most looking forward to was the Marvel TV panel, because I was looking forward to seeing what Marvel had in store for it’s television division. And let me just say, they did not disappoint! Jeph Loeb made sure he went all out for the fans, bringing us a first look at the new Marvel Mash Up shorts for Disney XD, as well as the pilot episode for Ultimate Spider-Man, and the season premiere of Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes!

The first thing Jeph showed us was the new Marvel Mash Up shorts that will be airing during shows on Disney XD. They took scenes from some of the old Marvel cartoons like Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends and dubbed over the original audio recordings to make them even sillier and goofier than they were before. They really are a lot of funny, and they had the crowd in stitches.

Then we were showed test footage for a new Marvel cartoon Hulk vs. the Agents of SMASH, that will premiere on Disney XD next year. The show will follow Hulk, Red Hulk, She Hulk, Skaar, and A-Bomb as they fight new villains weekly. It’ll be part of the Marvel Universe block that Disney XD is premiering on April 1. And one show is kicking off the new Marvel Universe block, and that is the new Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon. We were lucky enough to get a chance to see the full two part pilot, and it does not disappoint. Loeb was quick to point out the show was made for kids of all ages, meaning from young kids to their parents, and everyone can enjoy it. The show is really well put together, and is based off the Ultimate Spider-Man run of comics. Spider-Man is voiced by Drake Bell in this incarnation of the series. The thing I really enjo sy is that the show gets inside the mind of Peter Parker, and we see the inner workings of his mind, and usually to comical results. Everyone in the panel really loved the show, and the kids their were eating it up. This is the perfect show for families, so don’t forget to set the DVR for April 1. Loeb also hinted that the show will take place inside their ever going Marvel Movie Universe, which makes it that much more exciting.

And last, but certainly not least, after months of anticipation, we were treated to the season premiere of Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes! This will be the second half of the new Disney XD block. I’d been eagerly anticipating the return of this series since the cliffhanger finale of season 1, and I can say the wait was absolutely worth it. The season premiere picks up immediately following the events of the finale, and features the Fantastic Four and Doctor Doom, all of which plays in to what will be a big story arc this season. It appears someone in the team can’t be trusted…but who is it and why? Those are the questions posed as the episode progresses, and you’ll get a few on the answers along the way. But thankfully, it’s still got the fun and comical tone at times that the first season had, mainly coming from the Hulk and the Thing’s feud throughout the episode. Season two will premiere right after Ultimate Spider-Man on April 1.

Loeb then let us know that the live action shows of Hulk, The Punisher, Cloak and Dagger, and Mockingbird are all still in active development right now, but we won’t be hearing more about them until they get farther down the creative process. I look forward to hearing more about the shows in the coming months. He than sadly informed us that there is no plans to bring back Wolverine and the X-Men, their incredibly popular cartoon series, at this time.  Marvel really is coming along way from being more than just a comic book company. They’ve become one of the leading names in entertainment across the board, dipping into not only comics, but movies and television as well. There is a lot to look forward to if you’re a Marvel fan over the next few years. As we learn more, you’ll know more. I can’t wait to see where they go.
