The Clearwater Marine Aquarium has shared a sad update that Winter the Dolphin has passed away after battling a severe gastrointestinal infection. Winter was the featured dolphin in the hit film, Dolphin Tale and lived to be 16 years old with the help of a prosthetic fin and the care of her handlers through the years. Clearwater Marine Aquarium shared the update via social media with photos of Winter along with the caption:
“Last week members of our Animal Care Team noticed Winter the Dolphin wasn’t acting like her normal self. Because of the strong bond they have with Winter, they quickly noticed she wasn’t eating and began work to understand why. While her care team is still running tests, initial bloodwork suggests Winter may be fighting a gastrointestinal infection.
We have cared for Winter since her rescue after becoming entangled in a crab trap line and losing her tail in 2005. Winter is an important part of the CMA family, as well as the Tampa Bay community, and our dedicated staff will continue to keep a close watch on her through this healing process and provide her with the highest quality of care.
Her story of survival has inspired millions of people around the world, and she continues to show a strong, determined, and fighting spirit. The team is doing everything they can to care for Winter, including monitoring her around the clock, and we will keep the public informed of any change in her condition.
Thank you all for your continued support of Winter and the CMA team. Visit https://bit.ly/3CWnywT for more information and updates on Winter.“
Our condolences go out to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium Staff and fans of Winter the Dolphin ??
