Zootopia is scheduled to be released on DVD and Blu-ray starting June 7. Disney has remained reserved about their plans for a sequel. But the directors admitted that, if there will be a continuation of Judy and Nick’s story, they would have to address the true status of the duo’s relationship.

In an interview with MTV, directors Byron Howard (Tangled) and Rich Moore (Wreck-It Ralph) talked about the possibility of doing Zootopia 2. They weren’t surprised at all that fans were more than curious to find out if Judy and Nick will end up as a couple. The outlet held that Zootopia is actually the second most popular movie fandom on Tumblr, just behind Captain America: Civil War.

Howard and Moore revealed that they intentionally left Judy and Nick’s relationship status ambiguous. The latter admitted that they expected quite a reaction from fans, especially because of the way they decided to end the film. He, however, did not realize that it would turn into something huge and would even spark a debate online.

“At the very end of the movie, it does feel like there could be a little bit more, but never did I think that it would turn into the shipping that it’s become. It’s so weird because half the fans are like, ‘We love WildeHopps, and they need to get together and get married,’ and then there’s this other side that’s like, ‘No! They should not get together. Do male and female characters always have to get together at the end of every movie? Can’t they just stay best friends?’”

Zootopia fans will be delighted to know that the directors heard you. Howard shared that, if there will be a sequel to the Disney hit, we will all find out if Judy and Nick will end up being more than just friends. While they will be put in a tough spot, the director shared that they will definitely consider addressing the issue. At this point, however, Howard admitted that he is quite unsure of what to make of Judy and Nick’s relationship.

“If we ever move forward with these characters and these stories, then that’s a debate that we’ll have to weigh in on. It will probably be the main issue we’ll need to address. One side is going to be disappointed, and I don’t know which side that is yet.”

In a separate interview with Entertainment Weekly, the Zootopia directors revealed that they had to cut a lot of scenes, districts, and characters during the making of the film, just so they could fit everything into 108 minutes. Howard shared that there is actually still a lot to be explored in the world of Zootopia, and they would love to work on the project again, given the opportunity.

Moore added that they spent a lot of time inventing the fictional world, adding that it would be great if they were given the chance to go back and explore it further, as compared to creating something new again.

“We liken it to going to New York City for the first time. You see the highlights on the first trip, but when you go back, you get to appreciate things you didn’t know before, almost like a local,” Howard added.

Given that Zootopia has been a blockbuster hit, it will not come as a surprise if Disney decided to push through with a sequel. While nothing has been confirmed at the time of writing, the outlet pointed out that the studio is not one to shy off making sequels or animated series off a blockbuster hit, such as Tangled, Wreck-It Ralph, Big Hero 6, and Frozen to name a few.
