On Monday, ABC’s The View hosts were discussing the decision of a Tennessee school district to pull the Pulitzer Prize-winning graphic novel Maus from the curriculum due to “inappropriate language” and nudity. For those who are unfamiliar with the award-winning graphic novel, Maus “is a nonfiction graphic-narrative book by American cartoonist Art Spiegelman. Serialized from 1980 to 1991, it depicts Spiegelman interviewing his father about his experiences as a Polish Jew and Holocaust survivor.”

While discussing the book removal, The View hostess Whoopi Goldberg claimed that the Holocaust “isn’t about race” and was actually about “man’s inhumanity to man.“When Goldberg’s co-host Ana Navarro pointed out that the Holocaust was actually about “white supremacists going after Jews” Goldberg responded, “two white groups of people. The minute you turn it into race it goes down this alley. Let’s talk about it for what it is. It’s how people treat each other. It doesn’t matter if you’re Black or white, Jews, it’s each other.“
Goldberg’s comments immediately garnished backlash for their inaccuracy and insensitivity to the Jewish community. On the next episode of The View that premiered on Tuesday, Whoopi issued an apology, telling viewers, “Yesterday on the show I misspoke. [The Holocaust] is indeed about race, because Hitler and the Nazis considered the Jews to be an inferior race. Now, words matter, and mine are no exception. I regret my comments and I stand corrected. I also stand with the Jewish people.“

Despite this apology, Whoopi Goldberg was swiftly suspended by ABC News President Kim Godwin, who shared a statement via The Hollywood Reporter on the incident which reads: “Effective immediately, I am suspending Whoopi Goldberg for two weeks for her wrong and hurtful comments. While Whoopi has apologized, I’ve asked her to take time to reflect and learn about the impact of her comments. The entire ABC News organization stands in solidarity with our Jewish colleagues, friends, family and communities,” the statement continued, “These decisions are never easy, but necessary. Just last week I noted that the culture at ABC News is one that is driven, kind, inclusive, respectful, and transparent. Whoopi’s comments do not align with those values.“
