There have been many rumors surrounding the fate of Princess Leia in the upcoming Star Wars: Episode IX film since the passing of actress Carrie Fisher. Fisher’s costar Mark Hamill (best known as Luke Skywalker) sat down with ColliderVideos and gave his thoughts on the actress being recast.
Princess Leia was originally thought to be a strong figure in Star Wars: Episode IX but after Fisher’s passing in December of 2016, that concept was left in the air. After Disney and Lucasfilm both confirmed that CGI and motion capture were not going to be used to replace Fisher’s presence, the only two other logical fates for the Princess were to have her story end between The Last Jedi and Star Wars 9 or to be replaced with a new actress.
It has been mentioned that a possibility for the role of Princess Leia, should she actually be recast, might be Meryl Streep. Streep, who’s starred in numerous movies and won countless awards, was a longtime friend of Carrie Fisher.
The script for Star Wars: Episode IX has been completed and is set to begin filming this year. What are your thoughts on the fate of Princess Leia? Should she be recast or should the Princess have her story end in between movies?
