Walt Disney World Under Tropical Storm Watch as Tropical Storm Debby Nears Florida
Tropical Depression Four, which formed late Friday, is expected to strengthen into Tropical Storm Debby on Saturday and track toward Florida’s Gulf Coast, potentially impacting the Walt Disney World area.
As of 8 a.m, Saturday, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported the center of TD 4 located 75 miles south of Varadero, Cuba, and 170 miles south of Key West, with maximum sustained winds of 30 mph. It is moving west-northwest at 16 mph.
Tropical storm warnings and watches have been issued for various areas in Florida, including the Dry Tortugas, the west coast of Florida, the Florida Keys, and parts of the Panhandle. A storm surge watch is in effect from Bonita Beach near Naples to the Aucilla River, encompassing Tampa Bay and Charlotte Harbor.
The NHC forecasts the storm will make landfall in the Big Bend region of Florida early Monday, with winds near 70 mph and gusts up to 85 mph. While not quite hurricane strength, this could still bring significant impacts to the Walt Disney World area.
Rainfall of 5 to 10 inches, with some areas receiving up to 15 inches, is expected across portions of Florida and the Southeast U.S., potentially leading to flash flooding and river flooding.
Governor Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency for most Florida counties, and the Florida Department of Emergency Management has activated the State Emergency Operations Center. The Florida National Guard is also preparing for response efforts.
Visitors to Walt Disney World are advised to monitor weather updates closely and be prepared for potential impacts from Tropical Storm Debby.
