Walt Disney World Railroad Testing is underway both Inside and Outside of the Magic Kingdom. The excitement builds daily around the thought of riding around Disney’s Magic Kingdom on “Walt’s Railroad“. We get a nostalgic feeling from being on one of the four Steam Engines, which are named Walter E. Disney, Lilly Belle ( Walt’s Wife), Roy O. Disney, and Roger E. Broggie (Designer and Engineer of the Magic Kingdom’s Railroad). So where does the railroad project stand right now? Let us take a look, and then we can all take an educated guess on the return.
The Walt Disney World Railroad closed back in 2018, with tracks being removed later that year around the construction site of Disney’s newest roller coaster, Tron Lightcycle/ Run. Both projects were then delayed by the worldwide pandemic in 2019, and work restarted in 2021. During this time Disney refurbished the Fantasyland Train Station and Main Street Station. Then in the summer of 2022, we started seeing a new tunnel being constructed under the coaster, with tracks being laid a few months later. Work was completed on this section in September, and landscaping and finishing touches are being done as we write this.

This brings us to the beginning of the new month of November 2022. Where do we stand right now? Back in February of 2022, we spotted the refurbished Lilly Belle #4 Steam Engine at the Fantasyland station testing, and soon after the train disappeared from site, with only the sounds of the train whistle being heard in the distance.
Disney then released a post back in the summer of 2022, which you can read above, about new cast members being trained as conductors for the Walt Disney World Railroad. Still no site of any of the Steam Engines, but you could hear them in the distance again.
Walt Disney World Railroad Testing
Finally, just a few days ago, Tik Tok Account rjplansyourvacation posted the first site of the refurbished Steam Engine crossing the road going into Disney’s Magic Kingdom.
The tunnel under Tron Lightcycle/ Run is completed and the tracks have been laid. Again, the landscaping is being finished. The fantasyland stations are complete, and we are seeing ride theming being tested again at the stations’ Water Tower. The water tower is on for the first time in years.
Finally at the Fantasyland station tracks have been preset for installation on the backside of the Coaster and are being installed as we type.
So with all that construction being done and finalized, it looks like the whole thing should be done any day now. This leads us to wonder, when will we see the train actually make a full circuit test, and when can we expect the railroad itself to open again to guests.
Our best-educated guess, from watching all this over the 2022 year, is soon! I know that is a copout answer, but our theory is the tracks should be finished next week. Testing around the whole park should begin as early as the second week of November, unless it is delayed until after Thanksgiving, with an opening of mid to late December, We do not think it will wait until Tron opens. So end of 2022. at the longest January of 2023. That way Annual Passholders are not blocked out for the reopening.
