Walt Disney World Railroad Closing for Month-Long Refurbishment at Magic Kingdom
All aboard… but not for long! The Walt Disney World Railroad at Magic Kingdom is scheduled to temporarily close for an extended refurbishment beginning September 28, 2026. The attraction is currently listed as unavailable through October 29, with service expected to resume after the month-long closure. Disney has not announced a specific reason for the refurbishment.

The closure comes while the railroad is already operating differently than longtime Magic Kingdom guests may remember. Since July 7, 2025, the train has been running only as a shuttle between the Main Street, U.S.A. station and the Storybook Circus station in Fantasyland. The Frontierland station remains closed as major construction continues in that area for the upcoming Cars-themed Piston Peak expansion and Disney Villains land.
The shortened route takes about five minutes in each direction and has become the railroad’s temporary operating setup while construction reshapes the northwest side of Magic Kingdom. Disney has previously said the full loop around the park will eventually return once the new lands are completed, though no reopening date for the complete route has been announced.
The shuttle operation also brought a few changes to the attraction, including a Stitch-themed audio experience on the trip from Main Street to Fantasyland. Guests returning toward Main Street hear the traditional conductor narration. Some train cars were also adjusted to allow guests to choose seats facing either forward or backward.

This is far from the railroad’s first lengthy interruption. The attraction previously remained closed for nearly four years while TRON Lightcycle / Run was constructed in Tomorrowland. For now, guests hoping to enjoy the current shuttle version should plan to ride before September 28 or wait until the refurbishment wraps up at the end of October.
