Walt Disney Imagineering Shares Rare Historical Disneyland Concept Art
Disney history buffs, prepare to have your minds blown! Walt Disney Imagineering has officially opened up its private art collection to share a rare look at the drawings and paintings that shaped Disneyland into the park we know and love today.
In a special bonus installment of the digital series “We Call It Imagineering,” Walt Disney Imagineering President and Chief Creative Officer Bruce Vaughn joined host Denise to showcase three monumentally important pieces of theme park history. Together, they explored how the original designs evolved, proving that even Walt’s best ideas had to be tested, rearranged, and fine-tuned before they could come to life.
The standout piece of the tour was none other than the “crown jewel” of the entire Imagineering collection: Disney Legend Herbert Ryman’s original 1953 concept drawing of Disneyland.
This legendary piece of artwork has an unbelievable backstory. Back in September 1953, Ryman produced this massive, expansive drawing over the course of a single weekend, working intensely side-by-side with Walt Disney himself. Walt needed a way to translate his rapidly growing mental vision into a tangible visualization that could convey the massive scope of the project to potential investors.
While looking at the drawing, it’s easy to recognize the classic “hub and spoke” structure of Disneyland. However, Vaughn points out that the final park didn’t match the paper version perfectly. In fact, entire lands and icons were shifted due to the actual layout and terrain of the Anaheim property.
One of the most fascinating design changes highlighted in the collection involves the placement of Adventureland.
In Ryman’s original weekend sketch, the tropical paradise wasn’t where it stands today. Vaughn explained that during development, the design team scouted the actual Anaheim property and discovered a grove of mature, existing trees. Realizing these trees could immediately provide the lush, dense canopy needed for a realistic tropical environment, Imagineers completely relocated Adventureland to the opposite side of the park.
This hidden piece of history shows that from day one, Imagineering has always been about balancing wild creative ideas with real-world, on-site discoveries.
