Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment’s Up is the next major 3D theatrical film that will roll out without the eye-popping effects on DVD and Blu-ray Disc.
The studio will bow the title on Nov. 10 as a four-disc Blu-ray/DVD combo pack ($45.99); two-disc standard DVD ($39.99) and a single DVD.
There will be no inclusion of anaglyph 3D glasses, which offer a weak visual pop compared to theatrical 3D technology but is how these films can be shown in 3D on today’s TV sets. Households predominantly do not own 3D-enabled TVs that would allow them to view films in the same advanced 3D technology as shown on the big screen.
A Disney spokeswoman confirmed that the title will lack 3D effects, but she didn’t elaborate on the studio’s reasoning behind the absence. The studio has included anaglyph glasses for such previous releases as The Jonas Brothers 3D Concert Experience and Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert, but did not for Bolt.
Disney is packing a lot of bonus features into Up, especially on Blu-ray. Exclusive extras in the high-def set include “Cine-Explore,†a visual clip montage illustrating the director’s commentary; BD Live-enabled “Global Guardian Badge Game;†and several featurettes on characters Russell, Carl, Kevin the bird, among other items.
The Blu-ray and two-DVD versions both include digital copy.
Prebook date is Sept. 1.
