Universal Orlando Confirms the Reopening Date of Stardust Racers

Epic Universe’s Stardust Racers Set to Reopen with Updated Signage

Universal Orlando’s Epic Universe is preparing to reopen Stardust Racers, the high-speed dual-launch roller coaster, just over two weeks after the tragic death of 32-year-old guest Kevin Rodriguez Zavala. The ride could welcome guests again as soon as Saturday, October 4, according to a letter sent to Universal team members by Karen Irwin, President and COO of Universal Orlando Resort.

In the letter, Irwin confirmed that multiple layers of review were conducted before the decision was made. These included Universal’s own technical and operational inspections, oversight by local officials and the State of Florida, as well as independent testing by the ride manufacturer and an outside roller coaster engineering expert. All parties confirmed the ride systems functioned properly during operation.

But the coaster won’t be returning exactly as before. Universal is implementing several updates to how guests are prepared for the attraction, with a focus on making sure every rider understands whether they meet the physical eligibility requirements.

Here’s what’s changing at Stardust Racers (and potentially across Epic Universe):

  • Updated Operational Procedures – Team members will now follow revised steps to further ensure guests are physically able and eligible to ride before boarding.
  • Enhanced Ride Signage – Warnings and restrictions will be more prominently displayed, with reinforced guidance on who should and should not ride.
  • Wider Application of Changes – These adjustments won’t be limited to Stardust Racers alone. Other attractions throughout the resort will see updated signage and reinforced eligibility checks.

In her message, Irwin reiterated Universal’s commitment to safety, writing, “Safety, as always, is our top priority. To further assist guests in determining whether they can or cannot ride an attraction, we are updating operational procedures and attraction signage to reinforce existing ride warnings and physical eligibility requirements at Stardust Racers and other rides.”

The reopening comes nearly three weeks after Rodriguez Zavala’s death was ruled accidental, caused by multiple blunt force injuries sustained while riding. Universal has expressed its condolences to his family and emphasized that the decision to reopen only followed after exhaustive safety validations.

While the tragedy remains a somber reminder of the risks inherent in thrill rides, Universal is positioning the new safety measures as a step toward ensuring that future guests can ride with confidence. Epic Universe fans will soon once again see the twin tracks of Stardust Racers launch riders into the cosmos — this time with reinforced safety at the forefront.
