Union Election for 1,700 Disneyland Character and Parade Performers

Disney Cast Members who bring beloved characters to life at Disneyland Resort are voting on whether to form a union. The union election, overseen by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), takes place on-site at Disneyland from May 15th to 18th.

This move comes after a successful petition by a majority of the 1,700 performers, hosts, leads, and trainers working in parades, meet-and-greets, and character dining. They seek union representation by the Actors’ Equity Association to address concerns and improve their working conditions, ultimately aiming to enhance the guest experience as well.

It’s worth noting that most Disneyland employees already belong to unions. Character and Parade performers are a unique case, especially considering their unionized counterparts at Walt Disney World in Florida.

Voting in the union election will take place on-site at Disneyland today Wed. May 15, Thurs. May 16, and Sat., May 18. Each day, eligible voters will cast ballots at three designated voting locations. Cast Members attached to either the resort’s Characters or Parades departments are assigned to a particular voting location based on their first scheduled shift for the week.

Final election results are expected during the evening of Sat., May 18.

On April 17, when the petition for a union election was filed with the NLRB, Actors’ Equity Association President Kate Shindle said, “Our goal is to make ‘the happiest place on Earth’ a little happier. Equity has a very good relationship with Disney. We negotiate with them at Walt Disney World in Orlando, and with Disney Theatricals on Broadway and national tours. We look forward to meeting with their representatives across the bargaining table, and together, making the Disneyland Resort a fairer and safer place to work.”
