Tropical Storm Idalia Forecast to Turn into a Hurricane Later Today
Tropical Storm Idalia is anticipated to elevate to hurricane status as it approaches western Cuba later today. This progression is accompanied by heightened concern for life-threatening storm surges and the potential for hazardous winds in parts of Florida. The storm’s current coordinates are approximately latitude 20.6 North and longitude 85.2 West, with a northward movement at a speed of 8 mph (13 km/h). This northward trajectory is forecasted to persist until tonight, followed by a swifter north-northeast motion on both Tuesday and Wednesday.

The predicted track of Idalia places its center near or over western Cuba during the upcoming night, subsequently transitioning across the extreme southeastern Gulf of Mexico by early Tuesday. By Wednesday, it is projected to reach the Gulf coast of Florida. It’s important to note that this progression carries the potential for significant impacts.
Currently, the storm sustains maximum winds of about 65 mph (100 km/h), along with higher gusts. Based on current predictions, Idalia is set to achieve hurricane status later today. Moreover, it is expected to further intensify, potentially becoming a dangerous major hurricane over the northeastern Gulf of Mexico by the early hours of Wednesday.

In certain localized areas, rainfall totals could reach up to 12 inches, especially closer to the point of landfall in northern Florida.
