Gina Versace is a transgender woman who was employed by Starwood Hotels, which owns The Swan and Dolphin Resort, is now suing them because she claims that they discriminated against her. She has hired the well known Orlando law firm of Morgan & Morgan to represent her in her wrongful termination lawsuit.
She was hired in 1998 as a banquet server, she was hired as a man. In 2005 she changed her gender identity and that is when she claims the discrimination started. She claims hurtful comments were made and she was continually refereed to as he and not she in front of guests and co-workers, even though she produced documents proving her official and legal change. She says they cut her hours and punished her unfairly for taking breaks that she was entitled to. She also claims that newly hired employees were given more opportunities than her even though she had much more experience. She was eventually fired in 2013 and has had a hard time finding work since then.
She said part of the reason she is coming out with this now is because of the recent coverage of Caitlyn Jenner and Laverne Cox. She said that she wants to help others who might have had the same issues and might not know that the there are laws to protect them from this kind of discrimination.
Both the Florida Commission on Human Relations and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration dismissed a complaint from Versace in 2013.
The case is going to trial in 2016.
