Toy Story Showtime! App Review

Toy Story Showtime! is an interactive storybook app designed to help early readers pick-up on essential reading concepts. The story begins with all of your favorite Toy Story characters preparing for a Talent Show. Buzz is on a mission to impress Jessie. On each ‘page’ of the story, Buzz is coming up with a new act that ends up in a mis-hap. Will he ever figure out how to impress Jessie? The entire story takes about 10-15 minutes to complete, depending on how long your child plays with the interactive features within the story.

My 4-year-old daughter loves this app! She took to it right away. In fact, I let her try it out first and watched her explore it before trying it out myself.  She was able to discover a majority of the interactive features on her own! As the narrator reads, each word is highlighted so that your child can follow along.  My daughters eyes were tracking each word, from left-to-right.

At the end of the storybook, there are 3 interactive games that your child can play.  The first game is very similar to the old-fashioned, hand-held game “Simon.”  A sequence of dance moves are highlighted and spoken, then your child must attempt to remember that sequence and recreate it.  It certainly doesn’t become as advanced as Simon, as a new round will begin after 5 dance moves in a row are successfully completed.

The next game is purely for fun (and a great alternative if your child isn’t catching on to the memory game described above).  Your child can choose a sequence of 8 dance moves that Buzz must then perform.  Once your child has made their dance move selections, press the green play button – the lights will dim, and Buzz will start dancing the steps that your child picked out!

Finally, the last game is one that really helps your child begin to visualize words and attempt to correctly place letters where they belong.  Once the word is completed, the character will perform the word.  Below is Dolly showing us how to hop!

Overall, this is a great app! My daughter sat quietly and played with it for an hour!  She likely would have played longer, but the parent-in-me felt that she experienced enough screen time. She does ask to play it daily, the novelty of it hasn’t worn off. Our only complaint is that when the narrator asks you to shake the iPad, it is very hard to shake it ‘just so’ to activate the reaction desired.

This app typically is priced at $4.99, but now through September 12 (2012), you can purchase it for $1.99 – that’s a steal!  For more information, read our press release.
