Expedition-Everest-at-Animal-Kingdom

I won’t lie – I am a big wuss when it comes to intense rides. However, I have been on all but one of the rides listed below at Walt Disney World and, although they are rather enjoyable, they are top contenders for triggering motion sickness.

1. Expedition Everest

Themed around the infamous Yeti who is hiding in and around a forbidden mountain that it protects, Expedition Everest is located in the Animal Kingdom, located in the section of Asia. A favorite of thrill-seekers everywhere, it features train cars that ride both forwards and backwards. Combining these elements unexpected high speeds and entrances into total darkness at specific intervals during the ride can result in a rather unpleasant experience.

2. Mad Tea Party

Known as one of the classic rides in the Magic Kingdom, the Mad Tea Party can be an unexpected ride to cause stomach upset. It really depends on who you share your ride experience with. The ride features teacups from the animation film, Alice in Wonderland. Guests sit in the teacups, which spin leisurely with the ride. However, in the center of the teacup is a wheel that can be turned to make the cup spin faster. Therefore, if you are prone to dizziness and wish to experience the Mad Tea Party, make sure you ride with someone you trust not to spin it too fast.

3. Mission: Space

A star attraction in Epcot, Mission: Space offers two experiences that differ in intensity. In my opinion, they both can be bothersome to guests who have difficulty dealing with motion sickness. It simulates the experience of what an astronaut may experience on a mission to Mars. Lasting for 4 minutes, this ride is highly successful in creating the illusion of acceleration through spinning and tilting the capsules that the guests sit within. The centrifugal motion of the ride can cause many undesirable effects and it is encouraged that guests keep their heads flat against their headrests to help avoid this. The less intense experience of Mission: Space is known as Green Team. The centrifuge does not spin during this ride, however, the capsule still tilts.

4. Rock n Roller Coaster

The Rocking Roller Coaster is the only ride on this list that I have yet to experience. Located in Hollywood Studios, this ride moves from 0-60 seconds in less than 3 seconds before it shoots your vehicle through loops and corkscrews. I personally know my limits and am not comfortable being upside down.

5. Star Tours

Based on the successful Star Wars films, Star Tours is loved by many. Now featuring over 50 different ride experiences where you will visit destinations and the characters of the films. Much like Mission:Space, the ride excels in creating the effect of acceleration and bumpy rides.

  1. Hey Colleen, I have been able to ride Soarin’ as well, the first time I had to close my eyes for about 30 seconds during the ride but now can ride it easily and love going on it!

  2. You listed my top 5 rides to avoid perfectly! I did go on Rock ‘N Roller Coaster once, the only ride to ever make me vomit. I have been on Everest twice, both times involved sitting down afterwards to wait out the need to vomit . . .

  3. I have not tried Expedition Everest myself, but with a good dose of Dramamine, I’ve survived all the other rides – no problem. However, I do not recommend Soarin’ without Dramamine. I forgot to take it once until I was in the queue and it was too late. I was prone for the rest of the night. Could not stand up without feeling nauseous or dizzy.

  4. I’ve never tried Soarin’ because I was afraid of motion sickness…has anyone felt sick after riding that?
