Disney announced Thursday that Tom Staggs is officially the new C.O.O. of the Walt Disney Co. He is a 25 year Disney veteran and has held a few positions throughout the company. He will take on his new role immediately, while still running the Parks and Resorts division until they find someone to fill that role.
“Tom is an incredibly experienced, talented and versatile executive who has led Parks and Resorts during a time of unprecedented growth and expansion, including the construction of Shanghai Disney Resort,” Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger said in a statement Thursday. “His proven ability to lead a business as well as his successful tenure as Disney’s former CFO make him an ideal Chief Operating Officer, expanding his portfolio into all the company’s businesses.”
He oversaw the new Fantasyland expansion and the beginning of the development of Pandora: The Land of Avatar at Disney’s Animal Kingdom and the launch of the Disney Fantasy and Dream cruise ships at Port Canaveral. Oh wait there’s more, he also oversaw Cars Land at Disney California Adventure, the Aulani Resort and Spa in Hawaii, and three new lands at Hong Kong Disneyland.

This puts him in prime placement for Iger’s role when he leaves in a couple of years. Staggs hopefully cares about the parks since he was directly in charge of them. Maybe with Iger out of the way in a few years he will get back to what is important. Yeah, the expansions are nice, but people would rather have the parks back to their original condition. Clean, friendly, and “new” looking. Walt is turning in his grave at the site of his namesake.
