After 35 years Walt Disney World Resorts has welcomed home the Three Caballeros Figures, Panchito, José Carioca, and Donald Duck, which were part of the Mickey Mouse Revue when Magic Kingdom first opened on October 1, 1971.
The Three Caballeros played an important role in Walt Disney World history. In April of 1969 media and government officials received their first look at “Project Florida”, which included the Three Caballeros along with other concept artwork, scale model of the master plan, and other attraction figures. This preview was what gave first proof to the media that what Walt was building was not only going to be completed, but that it would be amazing, like none other.
The Mickey Mouse Revue was one of Walt’s original ideas that consisted of 96 Audio-Animatronic Disney Characters that would play music led by none other than Mickey Mouse. A highlight of the show was when the Three Caballeros performed the theme song from their 1944 film and the grand finale of all the characters joining together to sing “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Da”.
The Three Caballeros found a new home at Tokyo Disney when the ride was moved there, opening in April of 1983. The stayed for 26 years until the ride closed to make way for Mickey’s PhilharMagic. The figures haven’t been seen since, with the exception of an appearance as part of the D23’s Destination D: Walt Disney World 40th in 2011, until December 4, 2015.
They made their debut as the finale of Gran Fiesta Tour Starring The Three Caballeros, in the Mexico Pavilion of Epcot’s World Showcase, where you can see the sing and samba once again! They have replaced the screen that was serving as the finale previously.
With Magic Kingdom getting ready to celebrate its 45th Anniversary on October 1, 2016, it’s exciting to have pieces that were original to Walt Disney World Resorts make a reappearance! The Gran Fiesta Tour Starring the Three Caballeros is a great ride to check out while enjoying your time around World Showcase. On your next trip through World Showcase, enjoy great food and drinks around the world, and make sure to stop in and welcome back The Three Caballeros.
