Disney has been adding a variety of content to the Disney+ streaming service and despite the ability to use parental blocks to prevent more mature content from being viewed by young streamers, the Parents Television Council has issued a grievance against the addition of TV-MA and R-rated shows such as Marvel’s Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Punisher, The Defenders, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to the “family-friendly” streaming service, claiming shows with mature ratings will “tarnish its family-friendly crown.”
Parents Television and Media Council President Tim Winter shared in the statement, “For more than 98 years, the Walt Disney Company has been synonymous with the words Family Friendly, and I can think of no other corporation in American history that has been built more squarely on the backs – and on the wallets – of parents and families. The company’s eponymous platform Disney Plus logically marketed itself as a family-friendly streaming service, and parents have placed their trust in Disney to deliver just that.”
He continued, “It seems wildly “off-brand” for Disney Plus to add TV-MA and R-rated programming to this platform, ostensibly to increase subscription revenue. So what comes next, adding live striptease performances in Fantasyland at Disney World?”
We again want to stress that Disney+ already has parental controls available for subscribers to use to prevent inappropriate content from being viewed by young streamers, so if you are concerned about the content your kids are able to watch be sure to double-check your setting when these shows are added to Disney+ on March 16th.
