Monte Cristo Sandwich

Walt Disney World fans have a lot of perks when they come for a visit: choice of four parks, over 25 Disney resorts (and growing!), a slew of restaurants for every palate, great shopping, and the list goes on. Something has been missing, however, and we are happy to announce that isn’t the case anymore. There is now a Monte Cristo sandwich being served on Walt Disney World property!

For years, a fan favorite at Disneyland has been the Blue Bayou Monte Cristo Sandwich. I can speak for myself and say that on my first visit to Anaheim this was a must-try for me, and with good reason! The combination of ham, turkey, and Swiss cheese in a lightly battered and fried sandwich, topped with powdered sugar and served with blackberry sauce for dipping is unique and delicious. The sandwich has been served since opening day in 1967, and with over 200 eaten a day, it’s safe to say this is the most popular dish at the Blue Bayou.

With the opening of Disney’s Riviera Resort, new restaurant options have been made available, one of those being Bar Riva. This is where we find our new Monte Cristo. There are several differences between this and the original right off the bat: the sandwich is made with Gruyere instead of Swiss cheese, a Brioche roll instead of egg bread (like a sliced white bread), and strawberry preserves instead of blackberry preserves. It’s served with your choice of side for $12.49. The question is whether a twist on a classic is an improvement or a mistake. Time will tell!

If you are interested in trying out the Monte Cristo, whether you’ve already sampled the Blue Bayou’s traditional take or not, head over to Bar Riva at Disney’s Riviera Resort. Does it hold up to the hype of its counterpart in California? Let us know what you think of this mouthful!
