The Mandalorian's Giancarlo Esposito Receives Double Emmy Nomination

The Mandalorian‘s Giancarlo Esposito Receives Double Emmy Nomination. Actor Giancarlo Esposito thrilled fans on The Mandalorian when he appeared at the end of Season 1 as Moff Gideon to collect “The Child” from Din Djarin (Mando) and also revealed he currently wields the Darksaber in the Star Wars Universe. Fans are on the edge of their seats to see where Season 2 goes, but it seems Esposito’s brief appearance at the end of the season was enough to secure himself an Emmy nomination for “Best Guest Character” in a Drama Series.  That’s not the only nomination Giancarlo secured, he is also up for “Best Supporting Actor” in a Drama Series as Gus in Better Call Saul.

“I’m a little bit emotional,” Esposito says in a video he shared to Twitter. “What a great morning. I had no idea that the Emmy announcements were coming today and I just got a phone call, I’m a double nominee. I just want to say thank you to all my fans and my family for supporting me and believing in me. Mandalorian! Better Call Saul! It’s really exciting to still be as passionate as I am about what I do, and about how I present myself as an actor and a human being.”

Giancarlo’s character Moff Gideon, will be taking on a much more active role in the second season of The Mandalorian set to premiere in October 2020 on Disney+. Recently, Esposito spoke with ET about his time on The Mandalorian so far, sharing ”It’s such an honor, you know? Very few have wielded that saber. It just was really wonderful to be in the organic version of this story. Jon Favreau asked me to do it, I was head over heels, [Favreau] mentioned he had written it for me. I went and started to look at old Moff’s, “What’s a Moff?” you know, I went back, and looked at Peter Cushing was a Moff “What do they do, who are they?” And then [I] was really present in conversations with Jon about his imperial status, [Gideon’s] carry over from the empire how Moff’s operate and why. Possibly, leaving room, it’s always possibly, why he might be The Moff to take everything over. How does he know everything?”

He continued: “There were a bunch of questions and so, some of them got answered and many of them not because [Jon Favreau] is trying to find that out. So to be in the position of having that kind of regal, graceful power but have this saber, which delineates a different part of me, then any other character. To have this saber means I can use it and I can do my own dirty work. That I’m a fighter, that I am a warrior. That’s part of me. Also creates the possibility that he is , you know, one of the ones, you know? Like, [Gideon] possibly has that and that to me is interesting. Because, “Is he really that fallen hero? Is he a descendant of Darth Vader? Who is he? What does he want?” He knows all about everything and you’ll have to wait to find out and he’s pretty good with that dark saber too.”

Giancarlo was also asked about his thoughts on his co-star: “Baby Yoda”. Sharing, “Look you know, being on this set with this baby, we’ve all as cast members, Werner, and myself, and Pedro, have all said some different things about this very, very irresistible Yoda. I knew the first time I saw him he was gonna be the star on the show. I was like, I just reminded myself, “Do your part. Play nicely in the sandbox, ’cause it’s the cutest baby ever.” I gotta be honest with you and rightfully so. I know they went through great pains to figure out what that baby would be physically, how it would be, what it would be. And they touched down in the right place. So to be tied to this baby is great, just don’t let me catch you in season 2…”

To which they both paused and laughed with Ash saying, “You better not hurt him! You better not hurt him..” referring to “Baby Yoda”, then Esposito continued, “but you never know I just want to spend all my time with him so as close as I can get I will get and believe me, I’m good at getting close.”

Esposito is also very interested in working with Marvel, stating, “Well there’s been all these rumors about being with Marvel, I want to work with those guys, I put it out there all the time.” He continued to share that he feels a role with Marvel is the next step in his career and has several roles he would love to play in the MCU.
