The Cast of "Dumbo" Gives Insight to Working with Tim Burton

After his impression on movies like “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and “Alice in Wonderland”, Tim Burton has gained the wonderful reputation of being imaginative and magnificent as a director. His esteem was confirmed when the cast of the upcoming film, “Dumbo” had a few words to say about him.

In the movie, Colin Farrell plays veteran Holt Farrier who returns to the circus from the war as a single father unequipped to deal with parenthood and the changes of the circus industry. When asked why he took the role, Farrell said, “ I’ve been such a fan of Tim’s work for the longest time. The idea of [acting in] something as sweet and fantastical and otherworldly, while being grounded in some recognizable world that we can relate to, under the direction of Tim, was a dream … I’ve always been looking for something of that ilk.”

Max Medici, played by Danny Devito, runs the circus in “Dumbo”. Here’s Devito’s take on working with Burton – “He’s just really wonderful to work with. He’s deeply kind, he’s so invested. To watch him on the set, and how engaged he is, and how frenetic at times his energy can be, and how he moves. It’s just a joy, and he’s just really kind to everyone.”

Devito has worked with Tim Burton several times before in films like “Batman Returns” and “Big Fish”. He spoke very highly of their relationship when he stated, “I get emotional thinking about how much I care about him. Always spirited, always an artist, always thinking about the craft, always painting with his mind. I feel like I’m part of some kind of palette, a color scheme, in Kandinsky’s world. You see him work.”

Joseph Gatt, who plays Neils Skellig in the film, had some kind words to say also: “I don’t think I’ve ever worked with a director that cares about everything so much. He cares so much about the actors being comfortable in what they’re doing and feeling safe, and he’s put together such a great cast. We’re all just playing. It feels like there’s no pressure on set.”

After hearing from the cast, it sounds like “Dumbo” is going to be just as magnificent as Tim Burton himself. The new movie hits theaters on March 29th!
