“For generations, Disney has been an ever-present part of the holiday season all over the world, and this short builds on the enduring connection that so many families have with Disney during this special time of year,” said Asad Ayaz, Chief Brand Officer, The Walt Disney Company. “We’re thrilled to collaborate with Taika Waititi on this timeless story of childhood friendship against the backdrop of this magical season.”

“A Disney Holiday Short: The Boy & The Octopus” tells the charming story of a child who finds a curious octopus attached to his head during a seaside trip. Back home, a beautiful friendship blossoms as the boy introduces his new eight-legged friend to life on land, from wielding a Jedi lightsaber to playing with his Buzz Lightyear action figure and tracing Santa’s route on a map.

Hidden under a Mickey Mouse beanie, the lovable octopus then joins the boy to experience the joy of the holidays in the outside world. While watching “The Santa Clause” (1994), the boy realizes just how much his octopus friend wants to explore, sparking a plan to make it happen. This heartwarming short celebrates the precious everyday moments of childhood and friendship, showing that these connections, alongside the magic of the season, are truly meaningful. Disney fans should also keep an eye out for fun Easter eggs hidden throughout, referencing beloved films like “Moana” (2016), “Lilo and Stitch” (2002), and “Toy Story” (1995)!

“The story manages to connect the feelings that you get around the holidays, and the joy, the goodwill and everything, with those same emotions and those same sensibilities you get from Disney films,” said Taika Waititi. “I think they go hand in hand and it’s the perfect match – and only Disney could have made something like this…with me.”

“A Disney Holiday Short: The Boy & The Octopus” marks the latest collaboration between Disney and acclaimed filmmaker Taika Waititi. Known for directing Marvel Studios’ Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder, as well as Searchlight Pictures’ Jojo Rabbit and Next Goal Wins, Waititi also serves as executive producer for Hulu’s Reservation Dogs, What We Do in the Shadows, and the upcoming limited series Interior Chinatown.

This heartwarming short was brought to life with global creative agencies adam&eveDDB and Untold Studios, and produced by Hungry Man. Throughout the short, you’ll hear a beautiful, melodic rendition of “Part of Your World” from Disney’s The Little Mermaid, perfectly capturing the octopus’s longing to explore the world above. This fan-favorite song was recorded live by a 60-piece orchestra and mixed at the legendary Abbey Road recording studio.

This short is just one of many ways Disney brings holiday magic to fans! You can also experience special holiday events at Disney Parks worldwide, discover delightful Disney products, enjoy classic holiday films streaming on Disney+ and Hulu, and support the Disney Ultimate Toy Drive to bring joy to children in need during the giving season.
