Strange World Movie Theater Flop is now Number 1 On Disney+

After bombing at the box office, Disney’s Strange World is currently the No. 1 movie on Disney+.  The film features Jake Gyllenhaal, Lucy Liu, Dennis Quaid, and Jaboukie Young-White. Strange World is an animated sci-fi adventure film from Walt Disney Animation that was released in theaters on November 23.

Despite generally positive reviews from fans and critics, Strange World was a massive flop at the box office, grossing only $18.6 million in its opening weekend. The film is estimated to lose Disney at least $100 million.

Despite its box office struggles, Strange World has now rallied to become the number one streamed title on Disney+, overtaking Encanto at the Hollywood Bowl, according to streaming watchers FlixPatrol. Strange World premiered on Disney+ on December 23, 2022 and has climbed to the top of the rankings on the streaming platform.

Currently, the Top 10 titles on Disney+ include Strange World, Avatar, Encanto, Encanto at the Hollywood Bowl, Moana, Turning Red, Disenchanted, Raya and the Last Dragon, Frozen, and Frozen 2.

Many have credited a failure to market Strange World as the primary cause for the film’s lack of success at the box office. While flops are rare for Walt Disney Studios at the box office, Strange World’s lack of success is not an isolated incident. Just this past summer, Pixar’s Lightyear suffered from mixed reviews and underperformed significantly for a heavily marketed title. Strange World received little to no marketing, and many fans took to social media to say they weren’t even aware that Disney had released a title. Stange World was heavily overshadowed by Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which was in its second week when Strange World was released in theaters.

Despite its struggles, Strange World is now thriving on the streaming service and is being compared to Encanto, which underperformed in theaters but became a cultural phenomenon after its appearance on Disney+. We are just excited that now that it’s readily available on Disney+, Strange World is getting the attention and love that it deserves.
