Star Wars Movies from Feige and Jenkins have been shelved

Disney Shelving Kevin Feige and Patty Jenkins Star Wars Movies

In a massive Star Wars shakeup, Variety revealed that we might need to wait longer to experience Star Wars on the big screen than expected. Patty Jenkins was supposed to be creating a one-off film for theaters. Her movie, Rogue Squadron, has now been pulled, and sources close to the production say it is no longer in development. You may recall that the film was supposed to release in December 2023, but after being shelved, Jenkins said she would continue to work on the script. Variety reached out to Lucasfilm to comment on this news, but they did not respond for comment.

Similarly, an unnamed Star Wars project from Marvel CEO Kevin Feige has also hit the cutting room floor. News of a Feige-led Star Wars project was announced in 2019, leading many to speculate that Feige would also take the helm of Lucasfilm from Kathleen Kennedy. Rumors of a Feige project have limped on, and no further discussion of the film has surfaced in the past three years. Variety has also learned that Feige’s film is no longer in production, and writers allocated to working on the project have turned their attention to other Marvel films.

In related news, it seems Rian Johnson will continue to develop content for Benoit Blanc and Netflix rather than continue with his time in a Galaxy Far Away. Johnson has stated publicly that he still wants to make Star Wars movies, and while Lucasfilm has stated they want him back, we have yet to see anything on the calendar from the director. His film The Last Jedi was polarizing with the Star Wars fan community, so many may not lament the lack of progress on a Johnson-led trilogy.

So it appears that at the moment, Taika Waititi, like Obi-Wan Kenobi, is our only hope for a film set in the Star Wars universe for the time being. Without a script, nobody can pinpoint when a project from Waititi would even release. Speculation could have a film as soon as 2025, but there is no evidence to support plans for a film in that spot. We will look to Star Wars Celebration for potential news of a forthcoming movie set in the Star Wars timeline.
