Mega Star Wars Fan and German Professor Paints Observatory Like R2-D2. The project was completed in September 2018 and even caught the attention of Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill.
Professor Hubert Zitt, from the Zweibrücken University of Applied Sciences in Germany is known by his students and colleagues for his lectures on Star Trek and Star Wars. Professor Zitt gathered a small team and transformed the Zweibrück Observatory of the Natural Science Association into a likeness of R2-D2 from Star Wars.
Hubert was aided by his father-in-law Horst Helle, master painter Klaus Ruffing, and some students from the university volunteered their time to help create this masterpiece in the German countryside.
Though this was no easy feat, this is not the first observatory that has been transformed into the famed droid. Goodsell Observatory at Carleton College in Minnesota was designed as R2-D2 back in 2010.
“Dr. Hubert Zitt may be known now for his Star Wars and Star Trek expertise, but he got his start in electrotechnology,” according to boredpanda.com. “He received a doctorate from Saarland University in the field of systems theory of electrotechnology and is now a tenured professor in the field at the University of Applied Sciences, Kaiserslautern, Zweibrücken. When he’s not teaching electrotechnology he is spreading information about his favorite sci-fi pop culture.”
