Star Wars documentary 'Chewie' now in development

Peter Mayhew the actor behind Han’s best friend Chewbacca!

As reported by Examiner.com – It was high on the 2011 “Black List of Unproduced Screenplays” and now it might be produced. It’s “Chewie,” which will tell the story of actor Peter Mayhew‘s life during the making of original 1977 “Star Wars” film, now known as “Episode IV: A New Hope.”

It’s been reported that “Fanboys” director Kyle Newman is developing the film.

The Black List described “Chewie” as follows:

A satirical behind the scenes look at the making of Star Wars through the eyes of Peter Mayhew (pictured, above) who played Chewbacca.

If done, this documentary will describe Peter Mayhew’s experiences as he tried to balance a career as a hospital worker with playing the Chewbacca character.

Peter Mayhew is still around (he is 68), but in the books, Chewbacca is not. In the 1999 novel “Vector Prime,” written by by R. A. Salvatore, Chewbacca dies when he sacrifices his life to save Han’s son Anakin from a collision between the planet Sernpidal and one of its moons. You might recall Chewbacca owed Han a life debt.

It’s considered canon, and Lucasfilm even followed the book up with a four-issue comic book series titled “Star Wars: Chewbacca,” in which C-3PO and R2-D2 travel the galaxy to collect the stories of beings who knew or met him.
