James Gunn Hints that Star-Lord Could Get His Own Spinoff Movie
If you hung around for the post-credits scenes from Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3, then you would know that “The Legendary Star-Lord will return.” While there have been no formal announcements about the date and time of Peter Quill’s return, director James Gunn hinted at a solo project for the character as part of the director’s commentary.
Originally most assumed that Star-Lord would make a cameo in some upcoming Avengers film, but Gunn’s audio commentary suggests that Chris Pratt and Peter Quill have a lot more story somewhere in the later phases of Marvel’s storytelling.
Gunn stated, “We always want to give somebody a little something special,” he says. “And Chris and I, forever, have talked about how great it would be to be able to do a ‘Legendary Star-Lord’ movie, a story with Star-Lord on Earth trying to adapt to the environment of Earth in the same way that somebody else might try to adapt to the alien environment of outer space. He’s a fish out of water in just kind of regular water. So I can’t wait to see it.”
Who knows if something of this scale will come to fruition given James Gunn has moved on to helm a new universe of DC films, including Superman: Legacy in 2025. Given his busy schedule it seems highly unlikely that Gunn will return to direct any solo project involving the Legendary Star-Lord.

We could of course see more Guardians of the Galaxy under the leadership of Rocket Raccoon, but there is no announcement of a Guardians of the Galaxy 4 as of now. Bob Iger commented just yesterday that they will be making less Marvel and Star Wars films in the foreseeable future. Speaking to CNBC’s David Faber, Iger expressed disappointment with the trajectory of Marvel and Star Wars content stating, “There have been some disappointments. We would have liked some of our more recent releases to perform better…”
Iger added, “Marvel’s a great example of that,” Iger added. “They had not been in the TV business at any significant level. Not only did they increase their movie output, but they ended up making a number of television series, and frankly, it diluted focus and attention. That is, I think, more of the cause than anything.”
Given those statements and the absence of James Gunn from Marvel Studios, who knows if a Star-Lord solo film will ever get off the ground. What are your thoughts on a Chris Pratt led solo film for Peter Quill. Share your opinions in a comment and stay tuned for more news from the Marvel Cinematic Universe here at Chip and Company.
