Apple Looking to Buy Sony Pictures Which Means Spider-Man Could Return to MCU

Apple Looking to Buy Sony Pictures Which Means Spider-Man Could Return to MCU. Our Spidey-senses are tingling… It’s never over until the fat lady sings, and it seems the Spider-Man split may go out on a high note for Marvel Studios fans!

With the announcement of Disney+ by The Walt Disney Company, other networks and studios are looking to follow the trend and start their own streaming services, such as Apple’s recently announced AppleTV+. Pre-existing streaming services, such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, have already started creating exclusive content to stay competitive as streaming services become more prevalent. Disney had also gained majority in shares for Hulu and will be adding the streaming service as a bundle with Disney+ and ESPN+, as well as using Hulu to offer more adult content or content that they do not wan’t associated with the Disney name directly.

So what does this have to do with Sony Pictures? I’m glad you asked. With the rush to have exclusive content for streaming services, it seems companies such as Apple, Netflix, and Amazon have shown heavy interest in acquiring Sony Pictures for even more content for their competing streaming services. So, like Thanos, it seems some kind of purchase of Sony Pictures is inevitable.

Okay, so what about Tom Holland’s Spider-Man? Here is the BEST part for Marvel fans! Due to the nature of the contracts when Marvel first sold Spider-Man to Sony, if Sony is bought out by another entity the rights to Spider-Man are given back to Marvel. That’s right folks. Disney and Marvel may win in this battle for Spider-Man and not have to pay Sony a dime. So there would be no need for renegotiations, new contracts, or a split in profits from Spider-Man related content between Disney and Sony.

As @timvo said on Twitter, “Disney can get Spider-Man back for free so why pay?” It seems Sony may have lost their chance to negotiate with Disney due to this clause in the contracts and I think both Disney’s CEO Bob Iger and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige are over the moon at this possibility should Sony Pictures be sold. There is plenty of waiting to be done, but if the purchase goes through this would mean Spider-Man will return to the MCU! We love this, 3000!
