Southwest Airlines Ditches Open Seating: Assigned Seats Begin Next Year
Southwest Airlines is making a significant shift, ending its 50-year-old open seating policy. Starting January 27, 2026, passengers will be assigned seats. This change is part of a broader overhaul, which also includes the discontinuation of two free checked bags and the introduction of new fare types and benefit adjustments. These moves are designed to boost revenue and enhance Southwest’s competitiveness within the airline industry.

For top-tier customers, most of the new fees and restrictions won’t apply.
The new policy means a more traditional boarding process: passengers will be grouped by seat location and priority status.
You’ll be able to book tickets for flights with assigned seating starting July 29.
