The ACLU has announced that a Sikh employee has won the right to wear a turban and full beard while on the job and in front of guests. You may know that Disney World has a very strict dress code, called the “Disney Look“.
He is not technically a Disney World Cast Member. He is a mail carrier named Gurdit Singh. Disney prohibited him from running mail routes where he is visible to park guests because his appearance violated their strict policy. Disney began allowing beards in 2012 but they had to be very short and neat in appearance.
Disney attorney Armando A. Rodriguez-Feo sent a letter saying they have approved Singh’s request to work “all distribution routes in the regular rotation, while wearing his turban and neatly-gathered and tied beard.
Disney has made no comment.
According to the ACLU, for 7 years Singh was restricted to delivering mail to the corporate offices only because that kept him out the sight of guests. They said that meant a mail route with more work than others. That created some problems with co-workers because he was not able to help with their routes.
