Shrunk Down Adventures: Small Audiences, Big Fun

Part of the magic of attractions at Disney Parks is being transported into a whole new world. From escaping yeti monsters, touring haunted mansions, and exploring outer space; there are endless destinations where your imagination can take you. But some of the biggest adventures you may experience are actually attractions with the smallest characters or audience. Whether it be seeing the world through a bug’s perspective or exploring the human body from the inside, here are a few of our favorite fun-sized attractions from Disney Parks.

Adventure Through Inner Space

This former Tomorrowland attraction shrunk guests down to the size of an atom using the Mighty Microscope. Guests traveled through the inside of a snowflake, then a water molecule, and eventually an atom. This attraction featured the song “Miracles from Molecules” from the beloved Sherman Brothers who are also responsible for many classic Disney songs including the fan favorite “It’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow” from a Carousel of Progress.

FUN FACT: While this ride is no longer shrinking guests at Disneyland Resorts, super fans may catch a reference to inner space while exploring outer space. You can spot the Mighty Microscope hidden in the Death Star in the ride Star Tours: The Adventures Continues.

Body Wars

Another ride of yesteryear, Body Wars, took the audience on a miniaturized mission through the human body. Directed by the legendary Leonard Nimoy, Body Wars audiences were to join Dr. Cynthia Lair as she observed a splinter from inside the body. Of course, things didn’t quite go as planned and guests were able to explore the heart, lungs, and more before safely returning to the Wonders of Life Pavilion (and to their normal size).

Honey, I Shrunk The Audience

Honey, I Shrunk the Audience was a 3D film based on the film Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (and its many sequels).  In this attraction, the audience is invited into the Imagination Institute for a demonstration by Professor Wayne Szalinski of his amazing shrinking machine. Little did we know, the shrinking machine was being demonstrated on us! The accidental audience shrinking led to some hilarious hijinx but everything was back to normal at the end (mostly). This attraction ran at Epcot, Tokyo Disneyland (as MicroAdventure!), Disneyland, and Disneyland Paris (as Chérie, J’ai Rétréci le Public!).

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Nano Battle!

Join Ant-Man and the Wasp and they fight the evil organization, Hydra.  Audiences on this attraction are shrunk down to nano-scaled proportions to team up with favorite pint-sized pair to destroy swarmbots and save the day!

Fun Fact: Peyton Reed, who directed the films portions of Ant-Man and The Wasp: Nano Battle!, also helped in the creation of the Honey, I Shrunk the Audience attraction!

Toy Story Mania

Found at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Disney California Adventure, and Tokyo DisneySea, you can join in the fun and games of life as a toy! Shrink down to the size of a toy and explore Andy’s new Midway Games set—will you get the high score?

It’s Tough to Be A Bug!

Join Flik inside the Tree of Life at Disney’s Animal Kingdom as park guests are treated to a bugs-eye view of the world in this special 3-D show.  As honorary insects, we experience what it’s like to be small and learn about the different bugs that help keep nature balanced.  Be alert though, bug-sized people experience bug-sized problems in this attraction- like when a certain unfriendly grasshopper crashes our fun!

Ratatouille: L’Aventure Totalement Toquee de Remy

Shrink down to the size of a rat to explore fine dining in Paris with your guide, Remy. On this ride, we race through the kitchen of Gusteau’s and avoid the scheming Chef Skinner! This ride is currently found at Walt Disney Studios Park at Disneyland Paris but is currently under construction in the France Pavilion at Epcot.
