First Look at Marvel’s Secret Invasion Coming Soon to Disney+
Marvel’s Secret Invasion is a major crossover storyline in the Marvel Comics universe. It was originally published as an eight-issue limited series in 2008, written by Brian Michael Bendis and illustrated by Leinil Francis Yu. The storyline has since become an iconic event in Marvel’s comic book history.
The premise of Secret Invasion revolves around a long-running conspiracy where shape-shifting aliens known as Skrulls have infiltrated Earth, secretly replacing key individuals with Skrull impostors. The Skrulls possess the ability to perfectly mimic the appearance and memories of their targets, making it difficult to detect their presence.
The story unfolds as various Marvel superheroes begin to suspect that their friends, allies, and even fellow heroes may have been replaced by Skrulls. Trust is shattered, leading to paranoia and tension within the superhero community. The heroes must band together to uncover the truth, expose the Skrulls’ infiltration, and protect Earth from the impending invasion.

Secret Invasion had significant consequences for the Marvel Universe, as it exposed the extent of the Skrull infiltration and resulted in lasting changes to the status quo. The storyline had tie-in issues in numerous ongoing series and spawned several spin-off stories and mini-series exploring the aftermath of the invasion.
Marvel Studios announced a live-action television series called “Secret Invasion” as part of Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This new show has adapted the concept of Skrull infiltration and features Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders), James Rhodes (Don Cheadle), Talos (Ben Mendelsohn), and G’iah (Emilia Clark.) prominently. We are now three decades after the arrival of the Skulls, who have patiently waited on Captain Marvel and Nick Fury to fulfill their promise of finding a homeland. Seemingly their patience has run out, and the time has come for Skulls to emerge from the shadows and seek to claim the earth for their own kind.
Secret Invasion presents as a spy thriller, and we had access to the first two episodes of the series. Secret Invasion perfectly balances action/adventure with drama in a way that refreshes the spy-thriller fans loved in the similarly themed Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Nick Fury has returned to earth following the blip a changed man, wearing decades of emotional and physical scarring that have caught up to the super-spy.

The supporting cast finds their voice early, and Secret Invasion incorporates the new character immediately. For those who worry that they will be confused, Secret Invasion has flashback sequences, so don’t worry if you missed Captain Marvel; you can pick up the action easily without much prior viewing needed. Secret Invasion feels grounded. Whereas some of the latest MCU entries have blasted off into space, Secret Invasion brings the fight back down to Earth and establishes stakes that will feel very real to audiences. Geopolitical strife and global conflict play center stage, and Secret Invasion draws inspiration from real-life global conflicts that will feel eerily realistic to most.
Shout out to Olivia Coleman, who joins the cast as Sonya Falsworth. Coleman plays a no-nonsense British intelligence agent that challenges Fury and might be able to beat him at his own game. There is some outstanding scene work at play, specifically between James Rhodes and Nick Fury. Hold on tight because there are going to be some big surprises and stakes for the future of S.W.O.R.D and the planet. While we only saw two episodes, it feels like this story arc is building for something unique, and I can’t wait to see where Secret Invasion takes the MCU. Kingsley Ben-Adir, as Rebel Skrull leader Gravik presents a unique threat and is wholly convincing as the show’s villain.
Secret Invasion is a natural entry point for new fans but will reward longtime viewers with a comic crossover that was worth the wait. Secret Invasion premiers exclusively on Disney+ on June 21, 2023. Secret Invasion is directed by Ali Selim and written by Kyle Bradstreet. Executive Producers on Secret Invasion are Kevin Feige, Jonathan Schwartz, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Brad Winderbaum, Samuel L. Jackson, Ali Selim, Kyle Bradstreet, Brian Tucker.
