The manatee, weighing 855 pounds and measuring nearly 9 feet, was first reported in late October 2024 in North Carolina. Concerns arose as the manatee was observed listing in shallow waters and struggling to maintain its body temperature in the cold water. The rescue team, composed of experts from SeaWorld Orlando and its partner organizations, swiftly responded to the urgent situation.

Manatees, gentle giants often referred to as “sea cows,” are particularly vulnerable to cold stress when water temperatures drop below 68°F. Prolonged exposure to cold can lead to serious health issues, including hypothermia and pneumonia. The manatee, which had been spotted struggling in the cold waters of North Carolina, required immediate intervention to prevent further deterioration.
