SAG-AFTRA Approves Deal to End Historic Strike

SAG-AFTRA negotiators have given the green light to a tentative agreement, marking the conclusion of the longest actors’ strike in Hollywood’s history against film and TV studios.

In an announcement made on Wednesday, the union declared that the 118-day strike would officially cease at 12:01 a.m. on Thursday.

The union’s negotiating committee unanimously approved the deal, and it is now set to undergo the approval process by the SAG-AFTRA national board on Friday.

Over the past few days, both sides worked diligently to finalize the agreement, introducing groundbreaking protections for actors in the realm of artificial intelligence and a significant pay raise. The deal entails a 7% increase in most minimums, surpassing the raises granted to the Writers Guild of America and the Directors Guild of America by two percent.

The agreement also encompasses a “streaming participation bonus,” as detailed in an email sent to SAG-AFTRA members. Additionally, there are augmented contributions to pension and health, making the total worth of the contract exceed $1 billion, according to the union.

In the email, the union expressed, “We have reached a contract that will empower SAG-AFTRA members across all categories to forge sustainable careers. Many performers, both present and future, will reap the benefits of this effort.”

Anticipating nationwide celebrations, the union is gearing up for gatherings to commemorate the occasion.

Kevin E. West, a committee member, shared the emotional atmosphere in the committee room, describing “tears of exhilaration and joy” after the contract received unanimous approval. Speaking outside union headquarters, West reflected on the challenging journey, saying, “The final vote was unanimous. That’s a difficult thing to accomplish. It’s honestly been a really long two weeks.”
