Rumored: Disney “In Talks” with Kacey Musgraves To Star in the Live-Action ‘The Little Mermaid‘. According to The DisInsider, Disney has been in talks with musical artist Kacey Musgraves via Zoom. Initial reports believe this means Disney is interested in casting Musgraves as Ursula’s alter ego, Vanessa, for the live-action film.
Vanessa is the name of the human persona that Ursula transforms into leading to the climax of the second act, creating conflict in the third act, towards the end of The Little Mermaid to stop Ariel from fulfilling the deal with Eric. She was the sly fiancée of Prince Eric for a day, an attractive woman who briefly becomes the center of the plot and became a fan favorite character. She is voiced by Jodi Benson (Ariel) and later in the animated movie, then byPat Carrol after her necklace breaks and releases Ariel’s voice.
Kacey does resemble the character physically, and would be a powerhouse on the album for Vanessa’s brief solo in the film, potentially getting more music in the remake. Composers Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda have said the film will feature new songs including more music for Prince Eric, this very well could mean Vanessa will get more screen time as well. If Musgraves joins the cast she will co-star alongside cast members Halle Bailey (Ariel), Jonah-Hauer King (Prince Eric), Melissa McCarthy (Ursula), Javier Bardem (King Triton), Jacob Tremblay (Flounder), Daveed Diggs (Sebastian), and Awkwafina (Scuttle).
The Little Mermaid is in production at Pinewood Studios in London, which will begin reopening soon after abruptly shutting down production due to the COVID-19 Pandemic in March 2020. Be sure to check back here at Chip and Co. for updates on The Little Mermaid and all things Disney!
