When Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opens in Disneyland next month, you’ll find a unique restaurant located in the Black Spire Outpost. Ronto Roasters will offer spit-roasted barbecue meats and cold drinks for the guests visiting the outpost marketplace.
This first thing you’ll see when you enter is 8D-J8, an animatronic droid, complaining about his job turning the spit of meat over a fire. The restaurant takes its name from the large pack animals used as beasts-of-burden by the Jawas on Tatooine.
The proprietor of Ronto Roasters is Bakkar, a pod-racing fan who pays tribute to the sport throughout the eatery. Pod-racing flags and memorabilia line the walls, while the actual cooking of the “space meat” is done on a repurposed pod-racing engine.
What’s Cookin’ at Ronto Roasters
On the menu, you’ll find a mix of sweet and spicy flavors (a culinary nod to the light and dark sides of the Force). Brian Piasecki, Disney World culinary director for concept development says;
“We know that we are stuck with serving food within our planet, but we had to think about it differently. We had to think about some of those flavors of Morocco and those flavors of Asia because of that yin and yang, that sweet and that spicy. It all became very important in the development of the story.”
The Ronto Wrap is a handheld sandwich with spicy Portuguese sausage and sliced roast pork on a pita. It’s served up with the house “clutch sauce”, a spicy Szechuan peppercorn sauce. There’s also the turkey jerky that is made in-house and offered in two flavors, spicy herb and sweet teriyaki.
Ronto Roasters will be serving up sweet & spicy barbecue when Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opens on May 31 at Disneyland and Aug. 29 at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
