Romy and Michele's High School Reunion 15th Anniversary Edition Blu-Ray Review

Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion 15th Anniversary Edition Blu-Ray hits store shelves August 7, 2012.  Recently I was sent a copy to review.  I really enjoyed this Blu-ray edition of the movie!  It’s a fun, feel good movie that is sure to make you laugh!

The Story goes…

Romy and Michele spent their awkward high school years as loners.  After graduating, they move to LA to pursue the big city life and leave behind small town Tuscan.  Living it up in the city seems like the perfect life until they learn about their upcoming 10=year high school reunion.  Wanting to impress  their classmates, Romy and Michele reinvent themselves into successful business women and inventors of the ever-so-essential Post-it note.  After some ups and downs they make it to their reunion, only for the truth to be revealed.  Romy and Michele get the last laugh in this fun-filled movie.

Beyond the Reunion…

I really enjoyed the quality of this digitally restored movie.  The quality was especially apparent when viewing the original theatrical trailer (included in the bonus features) which was on the grainy side.  There was also a production featurette which Lisa Kudrow (Michele) and Mira Sorvino (Romy) talk about the characters and making the film.  This quick featurette was pretty neat, but it really left me wanting more!  Watching the movie in 2012 gave me a new (and laugh filled) appreciation for the styles of the 80s, 90s, and more specifically for Romy and Michele’s unique look.  I would have loved to see what into creating the characters of Romy and Michele through the artistry of the costume designer.  I also noticed the special make-up that was used  to age Romy and Michele from high school, to adulthood, and even as old women for the dream sequence.  I would have loved to see the process of  creating this transformation!

I remember watching this movie shortly after it was released and appreciating it for the comedic value.  At the time, Friends was in its prime and Lisa Kudrow drew me to the title.  It’s funny how watching a movie or reading a book can be different depending on where you are in life.  This past year marked my 10-year reunion.  Romy and Michele were much more lovable to me from my new perspective!  So, if you haven’t heard of this movie and you’ve “done” high school, I definitely recommend it!

For discussion…

While I was watching this movie I started thinking about all the changes that have occurred in the 15 years since this film’s original release.  From the flip phone to the styles, a lot has changed.  That got me to thinking…

Do you think Romy and Michele could pull off the Post-it lie today?  Imagine how quickly they would be found out with all the smartphones at the ready!  What could they reinvent themselves as in 2012, when resources like Google, Facebook, and beyond  are literally within hand’s reach at all times?  Hmmmm….  list your suggestions below and then put August 7th on your calendar so you can get your copy of Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion 15th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray!
