Walt Disney Pictures’ announcement of the live action prequel to Aladdin was huge news to many fans. Excited about seeing where Genies came from and how they became, well… Genies, had this entertainment writer ready to reserve her theater seats. Along with a new Aladdin film, was the hope that somehow, our favorite, the one and only, Genie – Robin Williams would somehow be a part of the film.

Recent developments have not only squashed that hope, but placed the film on hold for a long time. The Robin Williams estate in the quest to prevent his image / voice from being exploited after his passing has “bequeathed rights to his name, signature, photograph and likeness to the Windfall Foundation,” a charitable organization founded by Robin Williams. The provision not only prevents his likeness from being used in advertisement but bars anyone from developing a hologram of any of the comedian‘s previous stand-up routines, or ”digitally inserting him into a new film” until 2039.

Walt Disney Pictures is honoring Williams request and will keep all  materials in the vault, placing the Aladdin prequel on hold util further notice.
