Construction Speeds Ahead on Rivers of America for Piston Peak National Park Expansion at Magic Kingdom

Ka-chow! Construction crews are hard at work on the Rivers of America at Magic Kingdom as Disney prepares the site for its brand-new Piston Peak National Park expansion, part of the Disney and Pixar Cars universe. This is all part of the largest expansion in Magic Kingdom history, and the drained river is giving us a peek at just how big this project really is.

The water has been completely removed, revealing the Liberty Belle Riverboat track, much of which still remains in place for now. Along the banks, scaffolding has been erected, large concrete blocks have been staged, and several covered structures under tarp hint at infrastructure work that’s already underway.

Disney announced that Piston Peak National Park will bring guests into the awe-inspiring “wheelderness” of the Cars world, with snowcapped peaks, roaring rivers, waterfalls, and parkitecture-inspired lodges and ranger stations. Guests will find themselves at the starting line of an off-road rally race, with the rugged landscapes of the American frontier reimagined through the lens of Radiator Springs’ favorite residents.

This construction update marks a major step forward as the transformation of the Rivers of America begins to take shape. Once complete, the new land will seamlessly connect Liberty Square and Frontierland, carrying on Magic Kingdom’s tradition of sweeping American storytelling while adding some high-octane thrills.

The closure of the Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Square Riverboat began July 7, and they will remain closed throughout construction. When the project is complete, guests can expect an all-new way to experience the frontier — this time with Lightning McQueen, Mater, and friends revving up the adventure.
