Astro Orbiter Gets Grounded: Refurbishment Continues at Magic Kingdom’s Tomorrowland
Guests visiting Magic Kingdom this spring may notice a gaping hole in the Tomorrowland skyline—Astro Orbiter, the iconic spinning rocket ride that crowns the land’s entrance, is still undergoing an extensive refurbishment. As part of the refurbishment work, the entire upper platform has been stripped of its signature rockets and planetary decor, leaving behind only the steel framework that once supported this interstellar spinner.

The attraction, perched high above the PeopleMover station, closed for refurbishment on January 13, 2025, and is expected to remain grounded through summer 2025. While Disney has yet to reveal what changes—if any—will be made to Astro Orbiter’s look or ride experience, the current state suggests something more than a routine refresh.
In its classic form, Astro Orbiter allowed guests of all ages to pilot two-person retro-style spacecrafts that spun around a constellation of planets while giving breathtaking views of Tomorrowland from above. Riders could even control their altitude using a lever inside the ship, making each flight a personalized orbit through space.

With the rockets and planets temporarily out of sight, many are wondering if Disney is preparing a full visual overhaul—or perhaps even introducing a new theme for this longtime favorite. Until then, the skyline of Tomorrowland feels a little less galactic without the familiar whirl of Astro Orbiter lighting up the night.
Stay tuned as we continue tracking this refurbishment and keep our eyes to the skies for the return of this fan-favorite attraction later this year.
