Review: Switched at Birth: Volume One on DVD

Review: Switched at Birth: Volume One on DVD

Switched at Birth is an ABC Family original TV Show which first aired this June.  As with some of its other popular shows ABC Family has Switched at Birth slated for a “summer season” and “winter season”.  Fans of Pretty Little Liars know that this is a nice reprieve from the reruns usually being show at this time.  The half seasons work great and this show is a great addition to their lineup.

Switched at Birth tells the story of two teens who find out that they were actually Switched at Birth.  The girls couldn’t have had different lives: Bay is an edgey girl who grew up in part of a wealthy, happy family while Daphne grew up in a working class neighborhood with only her mother.  As you can imagine the collision of the lives of Daphne and Bay stir up more than just emotions.  Drama and personal revelations fill the first 10 episodes of Switched at Birth.

On Tuesday, December 13th the 2-Disc DVD will hit retailers.  Ifeatures the 10 episodes from this past summer.  The episodes included are:

This is Not a Pipe

American Gothic

Portrait of My Father

Dance Amongst Daggers

Dogs Playing Poker

The Persistence of Memory

The Stag Hunt

Pandora’s Box

Paradise Lost

The Homecoming

While the DVD set does not include special features it is fairly priced (although MSRP is $29.99 many only retailers have it priced at $16.99) for what you get.  If you consider that you pay close to that price for a feature film on DVD and you are getting over 7 hours of episodes it is a really good deal for your money.  As you can see if you flip through the episode descriptions, this is a really good take on the usual Prince and the Pauper scenario.

What I like the most about it is that it is a somewhat universal message and story.  While ABC Family originals are geared more towards teens I am a twenty-something who is hooked on this show! I also like that it is a 2-disc edition since it seems lately a lot of box sets have been breaking down into only 3 to 4 episodes per disc and this features one disc of episodes 1-5 and another of episodes 6-10.

With the winter season starting up after the New Year this is an awesome gift for someone who was into this show over the summer.  Its a great way to recap before the new season.  Not to mention, this is a great gift for anyone who loves other ABC Family shows or teen dramas.  Like me, I am sure anyone who receives this would be pleasantly surprised with the quality of the show and the seamless DVD production.
