A complete R2-D2 unit recently sold for $2.75 million at a three day Hollywood auction along with other Star Wars memorabilia, including Mark Hamil’s light saber which sold for $325,000.
The droid is constructed of aluminum, steel and fiberglass, and has none of the inside mechanics. It is said to be the only complete R2-D2 unit in the public domain. Standing 43-inches tall R2-D2 was assembled from components from the original “Star Wars” trilogy as well as “Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace” and “Star Wars: Episode II: Attack of the Clones,” which were made between 1977 and 2002.
The identity of the winning R2-D2 bidder, no doubt a huge Star Wars fan is not yet known. The auction house cautioned the bidders that special shipping arrangements would be required after the sale since the droid is in the United Kingdom.
Congratulations to the lucky bidder!
