Star Wars Galaxy’s edge was designed to make guests feel fully submerged in the land of Batuu. You don’t even see the other rides and areas in the park while you are visiting The Black Spire. The thematic experience is truly out of this world, even down to the trash cans. Characters are roaming about the land from Chewbacca to smugglers, and stormtroopers. Matter of fact Chewie is in the background of my picture from last week, making you feel like you are right in the story. The past few days in the Anaheim location there has been a fan favorite roaming around the planet, R2-D2 has been making appearances in part of a ”play test” as Disney is calling it.
He has been spotted around the Millennium Falcon, beep bopping and rolling away, while taking pictures with visitors. This has been part of the innovation and design plan for Disney to have droids roaming the land.
Currently you can spot a few stationary droid, and some in the droid depot, including a $25,000 remote controlled R2, but this will bring a new level of immersion to the land. Also a droid-driven coke stand has popped up, adding a unique way to get a refreshment.
We hope this means that R2 will stick around for guest interaction, and make way for other droids to start roaming the land as well. That is still uncertain as this is still in the testing phase, but Disney officials have mentioned that this has been part of the vision for the land from the start. Disney is constantly looking for new ways to fascinate guests in their experiences.
